Basketball Program Volunteers

As a volunteer organization we rely on the hard work of parents and other volunteers to make a successful basketball season. Please return the application form to Gretchen Hanson (slohgloh@yahoo.com) as soon as possible if you wish to volunteer for a specific responsibility. Please find a volunteer application in the links section of this blog. It has a list of several jobs that we need help with. If you have questions about the job responsibility for any of the volunteer position please see below. All volunteers identified as coaches will also be required to complete a leadership application with a background check. Coaches - We utilize both parent and college student coaches to work with each team. We want 2-4 coaches with each team. Parent input is considered in reviewing potential coaches for each season. The Basketball Committee makes the final decision on all coaches. Also the "lead" coach of each team will have a say in who ends up being part of their team's coaching team. If you are interested in helping coach a team please fill out the application and return to Gretchen Hanson (slohgloh@yahoo.com). Most team's practice are during the day and held twice each week and each team may play two games per week and on occasion teams play in a weekend tournament which would mean 3-4 games over a Thursday-Saturday weekend. The time involvement gets more extensive as the players move up from the 12U teams to the 18U teams. Our basketball program emphasizes Competition, Development, and Spiritual Leadership. Trainers, First Aid, CPR - We would like to know if any of our parents have this type of training. Assistant Scheduler - This person will learn the process of scheduling games for the program, scheduling gyms, obtaining referees and double checking places, dates and times with opposing teams. Team parent - this person is the main communicator for each team and also coordinates volunteers need for home games, and helping with other team details as needed. This person also serves as liaison between the Basketball Committee and the Team parents, players, and coaches. Additionally they assist in uniform check out and check in and t-shirt orders. Hotel Tournament Coordinators - Identify hotels for the tournaments and then provide information to parents to help them make reservations. The will be the liaison between the Hotel and Basketball Program. Equipment and Uniform Storage - Securely store the concessions, basketballs and uniforms of the basketball program. Uniform Check out and Check in - Work with the team parents to check out the uniforms to the players and then the checking in of the uniforms. Work with the Committee Secretary in maintaining records of the uniforms. Home Game Concessions Coordinators - Work with team parents and parent volunteers to ensure that concessions are at the home games and volunteers will be present selling concessions. Clock and Scorebook - We will training you on how to do these jobs. If you have further questions please call me 979-587-9245 or email Thank you Dan

Let's Finish Well and Not Tire of Doing Good

Galatians 6:9-10 English Standard Version (ESV) 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. As we head to the Texas Homeschool Basketball Tournament I want to encourage all of us to follow Galatians 6:9-10. I have been to enough of these tournaments to know that as the days move on and we all get tired and weary we have to try even harder to hold our feelings and emotions in check. Please know that as these tournaments progress it seems that the referees call fewer and fewer calls. As it says in the Bible what you sow you will reap, I wholeheartedly believe that if I question and disrespect the referee(an authority figure in the game of basketball) I am teaching my child to question and disrespect my authority. Given that, I want to remind you of the expectations of our program regarding our behavior towards referees as well as towards our children and towards each other. I want to ask that as we go through the state tournament that each of us remember the parents' and the players' pledges. A few key reminders this weekend are: I will 1. Follow the complaint policy and use the Matthew 18 principle when dealing with any conflict or concerns 2. Not criticize or coach my child from the stands during games. I will only verbalize encouraging comments during the game. 3. Honor those in authority including coaches and umpires or referees by accepting at all times their decisions without argument, grumbling, or gesturing of any kind. If there are issues or questions, I will not address those with the coach before, during, or immediately after a game, but rather at an agreed-upon time with the coach. If I have a complaint, I will handle it as stated in the complaint policy. 4. Not ever verbally address a basketball referee in a negative manner. 5. Honor the team that my child plays on by submitting to the greater good of the team at the expense of my own and my child’s ambitions. I will place other’s needs before mine. Thank you for remembering that wherever we go we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ.
